What does an ankle fracture feel like?

Well, this was a question that my tracker tells me brought someone to this blog. So, here is your answer. When the fracture first happened, I didn't think it was broken. I could still move my toes and I always thought if you couldn't move your toes then you had a break and if you could move your toes then it wasn't broken. WRONG! My ankle hurt only when I tried to move my foot, but there was no constant pain or anything. It was swollen like I did not know possible.
Then they splinted it in the hospital. By this time I was given pain relievers so maybe my memories of this are a little different than the actual event, but I don't remember it being too awful. It hurt, but not pull your hair, punch the guy splinting you kind of hurt. Just a normal hurt.
The pain started after surgery.
Anyways, if your ankle hurts and you think it could be broken then get it checked. I have heard horror stories about people who were diagnosed with sprains and told to weight bear as tolerated only to later find out that they had a talus fracture (part of the ankle) that was now irrepairable. Don't let that happen. I was lucky and the ER doc thought he saw something on the xray even though there wasn't an obvious break. The CT told the story of a shattered talus that is not visible on a regular xray because other bones obscure the interior bone structures. So, whether it hurts or not and whether you can wiggle your toes or not, if you think there is a possiblity it could be broken get it checked out. ;)

I think I broke my ankle as well. Someone spilled water on the floor and I didn't turn on the light in the kitchen so I didn't see it and I fell and spilled my drink everywhere. Problem is I have no insurance and no job. I'm trying to get into college and I'm 21. The job market here is horrible and I can't find a job here, my transfer never went through completely last year so I've been unemployed for over a year. I'm always spraining my ankles, but the pain has never been this bad and it's been like this for almost 24 hours. I can't move my ankle, but I can move my toes. I could see a bruise forming on my ankle, but it could be just a bad sprain as this is the 4th time I've sprained my ankles this year and I sprain my ankles at least twice a year. I had the ligament reconstruction surgery about 4 years ago and things just got worse. I currently live with my dad and step-mom while waiting to get into a college, but even though they said if the pain is worse when I wake up today I can't afford to go to the doctor and they refuse to pay for me. I just don't know what to do. the pain is excruciating. Right now I have an ace bandage on, but every time I try to move my leg I start crying.

For all who play basketball. I too thought I only had a sprain ankle but I went to the ER and was told I had fractured my fibula. I couldn't bear weight on it and it was very painful. BTW-I landed on someone elses foot and my ankle rolled.

I fractured my talus in July 2009 and my road has not been as long as yours but it's been long. I'm a soccer player and snowboarder and an outdoor recreation major so this no activities thing has really messed up my world. I was also told it was a sprain originally.

Im a athlete and Ive broken the same ankle 3 times and Ive also sprained it all within a year. It hurt like crazy when i broke it. After you break it, its really sore when you walk/run on it. The ankle usually is very swollen and bruised up. If you put your leg in the air and lift your foot upward towards your body and it hurts, then it is probably either sprained or broken. Usually a break has a pinpoint pain. If you feel around your ankle and it hurts when you poke it in just one spot, then its most likely broken. I had to use crutches the first 2 times. the 3rd time I broke it was right before my basketball season. I didnt want to miss any games and I was SOOOOOO SICK of crutches, so I decided to man up and play on it. It took an extra month to heal (2 months) but it was worth it.
